Planning a stay
Where should I stay to walk the Abel Tasman Coast Track?
The track starts at Mārahau, so Mārahau and nearby Kaiteriteri (where many water taxis leave) are the most convenient. Motueka, about 20 minutes further, has supermarkets and usually more choice for longer stays. For the northern end, stay in Golden Bay near Pōhara or Tōtaranui.
Is it cheaper to book directly with the host?
Often, but not always. On a direct booking the host pays no platform commission (Airbnb's host fee is 15.5% in 2026), so many hosts can offer a better rate or extras. Compare the total price and the cancellation terms before you book.
How do I book a direct stay safely?
Book through the host's own website or booking system with card payment, get the cancellation policy in writing, and check that the name and phone number match the listing.
When is the busiest time in Nelson Tasman?
The summer school holidays from late December to January are the busiest, especially at the beaches and around Abel Tasman. February to April and October to November are usually quieter and still warm.
Do I need a car?
In Nelson City you can manage without one. For Golden Bay, the lakes and most baches, a car makes life much easier. Inside Abel Tasman National Park, water taxis connect the bays.
